The Murray Darling Basin Plan

The Murray Darling Basin Plan is failing rural and Indigenous communities, family farms and the environment.
As a result of water reform the diversity of agricultural systems has been reduced, resulting in family farms becoming less resilient and flexible.
Family farms and the communities which they support are now past tipping point and at the brink of collapse. Job losses from the Basin Plan are massively higher than predicted, and the Plan is having a huge adverse social and economic impact on individuals, families and communities, including Indigenous communities.
The Basin Plan has not solved the problems of the Darling or the Coorong, and now there are environmental consequences which go unreported across the Southern Basin as a consequence of large deliverable volumes being forced through the system.
Government and large corporations have been complicit in dividing communities and have failed rural communities and family farmers who have the capacity to ensure the environment is sustainably managed for the next generation.
Environment and agricultural policy must go hand in hand, one does not need to be in competition with the other.
We call on all governments to put politics aside and start governing for the whole Basin by treating rural communities, family farms and the environment with respect and on an equal footing.
