The Issue

As a concerned Californian homeowner, I am deeply disturbed by the proposed Assembly Bill AB 942 that aims to fracture solar net metering contracts.

Our state made us a promise that catalyzed many homeowners to transition to solar energy. Now, that very promise is under threat from the very same state all because the puppeteers behind our politicians - utility companies - have decided they no longer want to honor the terms of their agreements. This is not only a betrayal of trust but a clear attempt to manipulate political power to favor multibillion dollar utility companies. The overly cozy relationship between politicians and the endlessly powerful utility companies can profoundly undermine the confidence of citizens in the sanctity of state-guaranteed contracts.

Our representatives should be advocating for us, the voters, not pandering to the special interests of monied lobbyists. If this bill passes, it will just end up challenged in the courts via class action lawsuits for years to come, meaning that California taxpayers will essentially be bankrolling the state while it wages a legal war on its own citizens.

Despite this clear attempt to wield public power to harm citizens in service of predatory utility companies, bill author Lisa Calderon (a former Edison lobbyist, no less) actually thinks the average Californian is stupid enough to believe her when she says that she wrote this bill to help citizens. The hilariously half-baked line is that rooftop solar customers are somehow costing their neighbors more money by creating energy for the grid. This is a blatantly and provably false claim parroted directly from the utilities themselves - the same utilities that received billions from the state to perform maintenance on their infrastructure only to pocket that cash, negligently allow their lines to fail, and ultimately cause the deaths of dozens of Californians.

Lisa Calderon thinks the average voter is dumb enough to accept such obvious, utility-driven propaganda at the same time state utilities are engaging in unprecedented price gouging, and indeed it seems an obvious conclusion that Calderon is consciously weaponizing the current public sentiment against the utilities by trying to redirect that ill will towards California homeowners who made the evil, selfish choice of... <checks notes> switching to renewable energy. These utilities have lied to us and killed our neighbors for decades, yet we are supposed to believe them when they say the solar panels down the block are the reason they've raised our rates faster and faster every year? The brazenness with which these corrupted interests lie to our faces should incense anyone. If you think that the passage of this bill would result in any reduction in consumer energy rates whatsoever, I have a bridge to sell you.

We are standing against this assault on our rights to sustainable energy and a green future for California. Politicians should take note: the signatories of this petition commit to not voting for any candidate that supports this bill in any primary or general election. We will also dedicate our energy and resources to the extent possible to campaigning against any supporter of this bill in favor of a politician who will represent citizens, not billionaires. We demand that our representatives uphold the promises made to Californians, respect our investment in green technology, and reject the interests of corporate lobbyists.

The politicians many of us expect (and indeed trust) to protect citizens, consumers, and the environment are clearly attempting a quiet coup against solar customers amidst national chaos and unprecedented ire towards California utilities with the hopes that their obviously illegal efforts will go largely unnoticed. Rarely do politicians provide us such a clear example of the meaninglessness of their words and their eager readiness to undermine their stated ideals in favor of monied interests - TAKE NOTE, and take advantage of this opportunity to identify snakes within the political ranks of the people we elected to represent us.

Your signature tells California politicians that supporting AB942 is political suicide, a message they seem to desperately need to hear right now.
