Commit to Measuring Fit-Out Waste to Advocate for Materials Legislation
The issue
Circular Design Thinking alongside those that we work with, have grown weary of witnessing the relentless cycle of overproduction, waste, and pollution. The churn rate of fast furniture and fast fit-outs has profound environmental impacts, all of which future generations will have to grapple with - unless we foster change now. We are 4&1/2 years into the Decade of Do.
Today, we call for your commitment. We ask industry around the Nation, to pledge to measure the waste generated in any residential and commercial projects they have committed to from August to December 2024.
The global waste volume is expect to grow by a staggering 70% by 2050, according to the World Bank (2018). Australia's own waste production saw a 10% increase from 2016-17 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2018). From de-fit waste to problematic materials in furnishings and refurbishments, the figures are indeed alarming.
This initiative is not merely about compiling data; it is a collective effort to demonstrate vital case studies to the Federal Government. It is high time we appeal, at large, for legislation to capture materials in fit-outs and refurbishments around Australia that should be valued as a resource. Let's measure to manage and show what is plausible. Our industry can implement circular economy principles to create a realistic infrastructure. But we need to do it now.
Your organsiation's pledge to take this step will be instrumental in our mission. To transition Australia's fit out and interiors industry from a linear model to Circularity before 2030. We sincerely believe that together, we can design a sustainable future for our children.
Our goal is to get 2,500 commercial and residential projects that are committed to in the next 6 months. Declaring the tracking of fit-out waste throughout the project. Please note that these projects don't need to be completed in the next 6 months.
CDT will contact you individually to discuss how the waste can be quantified throughout the project process.
Your commitment will make a difference, as part of our industry please sign our petition today.
