Commission City of Greenville parking lot in the Village of West Greenville

Commission City of Greenville parking lot in the Village of West Greenville
The Issue
The Village of West Greenville is a historic neighborhood within the City of Greenville comprised of full time residents and over 150 locally owned businesses with a passion for community, diversity, and creativity. These businesses employ over 800 people alone and bring in thousands of customers on a weekly basis. In the past two years the Village Business Association has devoted countless hours to foster growth and success to the area and many businesses have seen a 15-35 percent increase in business within the past year alone.
Unfortunately at the same time constuction in the area has started, taking away all options of free parking, private lots in the Village have contracted to charge for parking at a rate of 3$/hr all days/all times. The City of Greenville only provides the area with 57 timed 2hr. free parking spaces. The 24 monthly rate spaces they have provided are full. This leaves only 367 private lot spaces for 800 employees, 465 of which need them daily. Many of these employees make less than $100 a day, $25 of which will now go to parking, over $6,000.00 a year of hard-earned wages. This is not feasible for employees and business owners are concerned about not only their staff but their customers having a reasonable place to park as well. Paying $3 to park for a $6 food item or gift is an unreasonable ask. The Downtown Greenville lots charge $1/hr, many with first hour free and free weekends. These lots cap Downtown employees at $7/day and Downtown is where many employees make more than $200/day. The Village of West Greenville is NOT Downtown and we have reminded PMC parking of Nashville and private lot owners we are NOT Nashville.
It has taken years, coupled with blood, sweat, and tears to revitalize The Village and if an immediate parking solution is not provided all the hard work will be for naught. Businesses and employees will struggle, foot traffic will decrease, and residents will feel the neglect from their community once again.
We, The Village of West Greenville community and supporters are asking the City of Greenville to take immediate action in helping the community with a parking solution until a long term solution can be implemented. It is our ask that the city purchase one of the many private lots offered for sale to the City to create more public parking spaces and more parking for the employees and business owners that make up this thriving area.
