Columbians Against Data Centers

Columbians Against Data Centers

The Issue

As most of you know, data centers are sweeping the nation and causing environmental damage, decreased job security, and increased noise to surrounding areas.  It has recently been discovered that data centers create heat islands that can raise the surrounding area up to 16°. Building a data center in our town could potentially cause irreversible damage to our environment, our community and our economy. Data centers could raise home energy costs as well as negatively impact quality of life.

I'd like to thank everyone who came out last night to the council meeting! I am very happy we voted to reject the bid and I hope this passion continues as we work to find a new buyer for the property. We only had a week to digest the information and make a decision (per state law) and with so much on the line both financially and community wise, it was not a black and white decision. While the sale of the property and following property tax revenue could have been a great help in closing the budget deficit the borough faces, it is not worth putting that burden on the backs of hard-working Columbians in 9th/5th ward and beyond. We genuinely did not expect the usual 10-person council meeting to become well over 400 and I'd like to thank the folks who volunteered to step outside so the meeting could continue. When faced with the only choice being to cancel the meeting (as we are not allowed to change locations without multiple day notice), the people of Columbia came through. I also promise that we will be discussing ways to make this process as transparent as possible before the next round of bidding opens, to give everyone the chance to make an informed decision that benefits the community. We WILL find another buyer that will do right by the community and help improve the borough into the future. Thank you! Ethan Byers Columbia Borough Council
