About 350 people attended the Broadmoor Land Swap meeting last night. Below is a link to a summary of the night provided by input from several attendees.
We thank each and every one of you for showing your support by attending and speaking against this deal. Your voices do matter so very much. We received several emails this morning, but here is an email from a man who drove all the way there last night from Blackforest and is an avid hiker. Wow! What terrific support and passion for public lands. He shared what he wrote to City Council first thing this morning and here are a few excerpts which represent the concerns of many:
"Over the past couple of months, the negotiations for the 189.9 acre Strawberry Fields portion of North Cheyenne Canon Park in the land swap proposed by the Broadmoor Hotel has mostly been a process of escalating promises by the hotel to maintain the area's natural setting, as well as growing assurances in continuing to allow public use. I think like most who oppose the land deal, that if the deal goes through, the Anschutz Corporation will begin using its considerable resources, connections, and their many well-paid, well-credentialed attorneys to undermine the public access it promises, much in the same way it has used its newspaper the Gazette in promoting the land swap. I think like many who call this region home, I am highly dubious of any suggestion that the Daniels Pass Area is equal in commercial value to Strawberry Fields, that is unless the Broadmoor Hotel has done a serious amount of grading in the last couple of weeks and really improved its accessibility.
Despite assurances from last night's meeting at Gold Camp Elementary, I remain 100% convinced the best way to ensure Strawberry Fields remains open to the public in the future is for it to remain as it is in the present, owned by the public. Please keep the 189.9 acres apart of North Cheyenne Canon Park. The continued concessions in public accessibility made by the Broadmoor in allowing access to the area, I think also clearly shows the Broadmoor ultimately knows Strawberry Fields is best left a part of the North Cheyenne Canon as well. I believe the last 100+ years have shown the citizens of Colorado Springs to be the rightful, responsible stewards of Strawberry Fields."
