Stop the stress. Students can't take on added pressure.

The Issue

The last 3 months have changed the world we live in. Our lives have completely transformed and for a lot us it has become nothing short of a struggle to survive. Students have had to leave their hostels, their colleges, their student lives behind and travel back to their homes. (Some of us weren't so lucky). Our lives have transformed beyond being just a student. We are now responsible of taking care of our family, our homes, our physical and mental health. Many students are stranded at places that are not even their homes and are struggling to arrange for sufficient food and to complete their daily routines.

Students have lost access to resources they depend on for education. Lot of us don't have WiFi at our homes. Without Lab resources and professional educators by our side, getting work done with mobile data and online lectures are not just tough but also inadequate to help us understand. Many of us have left behind our textbooks and our notes. With all due respect to our professors, most of them severely lack the necessary experience or skill in conducting online classes and developing online resources for the students. They cannot be blamed, nobody was prepared for such a situation. Due to weather conditions in different parts of India, electricity cuts are also a cause of concern.

These changes are beyond our control, yet our institutions have not been considerate enough to reduce our work load, to extend our deadlines and to realize that it is more important for students to be healthy and happy than to conduct and complete their academic responsibilities in these difficult times.

It is important and necessary that as our mode of education has changed, they have to accept and make changes to their expectations from the students. Especially colleges that are trying to complete the entire semesters academic work regardless of the fact that students aren't able to.

It is a well known fact that learning online is not only insufficient but also considerably less motivating and adequate. How much can a teacher teach and how much can a student learn from online classes. While the need for online classes and online resources are unarguably necessary given today's world, it is of paramount necessity to ensure that academic assessments undergo a transformation that is more suitable to the students and not the institutions.

Adding to this, most states have stringent quarantine measures which really does not support or motivate students or their parents to let us travel back.

Students, I understand how hard it is to be hopeful for a positive outcome given the lack of our influence, but I strongly believe that if all of us come together, our voices will reach their ears.

So I urge all of you students, teachers, parents and anyone else who is able to sympathize with us and is hopeful in making a positive change. Please support this petition and urge our leaders to do what is right by ensuring that our students lives remain our top priority and not the examinations or deadlines just to fulfil your justifications for collecting student fee.
