The Issue

We are a group of College of Charleston students who have observed the continued reports of violence, disregard for due process, and human rights violations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) officials and deputies against immigrants and U.S. citizens alike. These actions represent an infringement on the general safety and the dignity of the Charleston and national community.

We are very concerned by the lack of awareness and institutional response from the College of Charleston administration on these matters, most especially due to the many students, faculty, and staff who are affected by immigration enforcement actions. In response, in order to promote transparency, safety, and education on campus, we demand that the CofC administration:

Hold bi-annual Know Your Rights educational panels/events for faculty, staff, and student body

Provide campus advisory alerts for I.C.E. presence on and near campus

Re-emphasize and make public the requirement of a judicial warrant for I.C.E. officers to access campus

These measures will ensure all members of the CofC community are aware of their rights and have protective measures in place from the institution to preserve their safety and well-being.
