Get College Board to create an AP course on African History
The Issue
Throughout my four years in high school, I have become well acquainted with the College Board and the academic programs that it offers. Though I am thankful to have received credit for courses I would have had to take in college, it's always bothered me how Euro-centric its history courses have been. For starters, the College Board offers an AP course in European history, but not in the history of any other cultures. It's AP World History course is also heavily focused on Europe, and seems to neglect to talk about African, Asian, and Pacific cultures once colonialism happens (when they are talked about, it only focuses on what the Europeans did to them). Their U.S. course as well neglects to address the fact that rights for black Americans were not achieved through the Civil War or the Civil Rights Movement in the '60s.
I believe that this is the perfect time for the College Board to diversify their AP program with the addition of an AP course in African History. It is clear, that many Americans don't understand black culture because of how Euro-centric the American educational system is, and we need a course that focuses solely on black history now more than ever. By educating students all over America on black history, we can hope to not only stop police brutality and black stereotypes but to also keep the BLM movement going beyond 2020.
