The big supermarkets in Australia have an incredible power to make change. In the past, they have required a specific minimum size for barcodes for more efficient scanning. They requested it, and every brand jumped to action, as failure to do so, meant that they could not stock their products in the supermarkets - losing the majority of their sales.

But now we need them to do even more. These supermarkets now have the ability to demand less wasteful packaging. For example, setting a benchmark of no more than 20% waste, meaning 80% needs to be easily recycled. Shrink-wrapping a single cucumber on a polystyrene tray is wasteful and ridiculous! Selling a box of 100 single-use plastic drinking straws in a plastic box is ridiculous!

Supermarkets could demand that the brands use recycled cardboard instead of glossy new stock. Sugarcane trays instead of polystyrene. Even to use soft plastic instead of cling wrap where it is absolutely necessary. (RedCycle can at least recycle soft plastic, but cannot recycle cling wrap). Sometimes a simple box is easier than an intricate package design, as the intricate package requires plastic windows, glue and all kinds of treatments that can make the box non-recyclable in a standard recycling bin.

I have worked for many years as a Graphic Designer - creating many of these packs. I have seen the clout that the supermarkets have with barcodes; rejecting designs for a barcode that is a fraction of a millimetre too small. They often demand custom sized packs to fit better in their displays. Brands bend to their demands, as without their supermarket shelves to sell their wares, they lose almost 90% of their market. Brands will literally spend more money to get their products on the shelves.

We need to push for these supermarkets to demand change. To tell the brands that enough is enough. We are facing a garbage glut in this country. Too much waste is being sent to landfill. Single-use packaging, often treated with harmful coatings or mixed-media (cardboard with little plastic windows) are sending what COULD be recycled into landfill. Supermarkets need to set a benchmark and aim to get the level of wasteful packaging down to 0%.
