I am proud to call Tasmania my home. It’s a unique place, nestled inside a spectacular coastline. The diverse marine ecosystems support our thriving fishing industry which employs thousands of Tasmanians. But beneath this paradise, a battle is raging against Tasmanian fish farms.

Fueled by greed, the two salmon giants, Tassal and Huon Aquaculture have been expanding unsustainably, pushing out smaller operators. They have turned the industry into a toxic bloated monster that is polluting our water, destroying the beautiful environment, and dividing communities.

We are calling on Coles and Woolworths to take a stand and help stop the unsustainable growth of the Tasmanian salmon industry.

Instead of regulating the industry, the Tasmanian government has been cheerleading its reckless expansion which only makes big money for a small group of people. In fact, the government is supportive of doubling the size of an industry already too big for the island. 

I've dedicated my life to protecting our environment and jobs, working for years with organisations dedicated to sustainable growth. It’s heartbreaking to see hardworking jobs put at risk and professional fishers pushed to the side just so a few companies can make endless profits. The community has all the answers - our leaders must listen to us. 

The unhealthy relationship between the politicians and the salmon industry giants needs to end so the Tasmanian salmon industry can have a real future. We risk the collapse of the entire industry, the loss of thousands of local jobs if we continue unsustainably in the greed for more profits for some.

The Government won’t protect us, so we need your help to protect ourselves. The majority of this salmon is sold in mainland Australia through Woolworths and Coles.

We are calling on Coles and Woolworths to sign the Dennes Point Declaration and demand that the unsustainable expansion of the salmon industry be stopped. We want:

1. A moratorium on any new industrial fish farms in Tasmania's coastal, estuary and river waters 

2. An immediate government led transition out of the sea and into land based farms

3. An independent, empowered and resourced regulator guided by independent science and community values.
