Close the Arches at Harrigan's and Ulster Bank to cars

The Issue

Kildare County Council to permanently close the arched roadway sections of Francis Street and Thomas Street (where they pass under the archways off Main Street, Newbridge) to all vehicular traffic, and to designate them as pedestrian-only routes.

Why we support this:

  1. Safety: The archways are extremely narrow, with little space for both vehicles and pedestrians. Every morning there are near misses involving parents and school children as cars attempt to use these arches. Pedestrianisation will eliminate this daily risk.
  2. Accessibility: Restricting vehicles will make the archways safer for people walking, using wheelchairs, buggies, or mobility aids.
  3. Heritage and character: These unique archways should be enjoyed as public spaces, free from the risks and congestion caused by cars.
  4. Local vitality: Safer, people-friendly archways will encourage footfall.

Our request:
That Kildare County Council commence the statutory process under the Roads Act 1993 and the Road Traffic Act 1994 to:

  1. Publish a Notice of Intention to permanently close the arched sections of Francis Street and Thomas Street to vehicles.
  2. Carry out the required public consultation and Garda consultation.
  3. Make the necessary Orders to ensure these archway roads are pedestrian-only, with exceptions for emergency access if required.

We believe pedestrianising the archways will improve safety, accessibility, and the overall character of Newbridge town centre.
