Close RT68 & Maple Intersection

Close RT68 & Maple Intersection
The Issue
Goal: Shut down the intersection of Route 68 & Maple Ave in Durham CT.
Why: Accident after accident occurs there and it becomes more dangerous each year. The town leadership for years has refused to take any serious action to curb or stop accidents. This issue came to a dangerous point last year when a driver ran a stop sign and hit a truck driven by teenagers. Those poor young boys were focibly sent flying into a resident’s home which cause thousands of dollars in damage. Thankfully no one was killed, but the damage and injuries were severe.
(This was after years of pleading with the town to do something to avoid that very situation.)
Why shut down the road and not just add stop signs to 68? We have asked the town in the past for methods to slow the traffic like stop signs or lights, but the town stated they have no say as RT68 is a state road and because the state considers the road a ramp those options are not feasible.
Why should I sign? If you’re a resident of Maple Ave the answer is simple…this change will ensure your safety and the safety of your family, friends, and neighbors. Even if you don’t live on Maple Ave, but you and people you know drive on 68, this is still a major hazard. Driving through the intersection is a roll of the dice day to day. Just because you may drive safer through the intersection doesn’t mean others will. This is a risk for all drivers and their loved ones.
This is a plea to ask our neighbors for help. Imagine it’s your spouse, your child, your pet, or your home at risk. This isn’t just our issue, there are intersections and roads all over Durham the town refuses to fix.
Let this be the first domino to fall and force the town into action. A stand with us will ensure I stand with everyone. This is for you and your family and we appreciate your support.
