Close Miami Data Center Loophole to Protect Water Resources

Close Miami Data Center Loophole to Protect Water Resources

The Issue

Miami is facing a critical challenge, and it's happening right in our own backyard. As three large AI data centers break ground in our community, many residents remain in the dark. These centers include Date, Iron Mountains MIA, and I AM data centers, located in District 12 metro blocks and on Northwest 137th Avenue. Disturbingly, neighbors near these sites report they were never notified about these developments. This lack of transparency is not just an oversight—it's a threat.

A major concern is the staggering amount of water these data centers consume. Up to 5 million gallons per day are used by a single large facility, impacting the very ecosystem that sustains the Everglades. This excessive water usage, in a vital ecological area, poses a risk to our natural resources and the delicate balance necessary for the Everglades' survival.

Furthermore, a Bloomberg analysis indicates that electric bills for residents near similar data centers have surged by as much as 267% over five years. The backup diesel generators used by these centers aren't just noisy; they emit nitrogen oxide and fine particles, pollutants linked to asthma and heart disease. Although Florida enacted SB 484 to protect residents, many of these Miami facilities bypass the law's 50-megawatt threshold, exploiting loopholes to continue their operations unchecked.

We must act to close these legal loopholes and ensure transparent communication with the community. Our goal is to amend existing legislation to include stricter regulations on data center projects, particularly regarding environmental impacts such as water usage and emissions. We must protect our health, reduce costs on our electricity bills, and preserve Miami's unique ecosystems.

Join us in urging Miami Dade County Commissioners and the Florida Public Service Commission to enforce stricter controls and deny water permits that harm our environment. Let's demand a change in policy to safeguard our home. Sign this petition to ensure clean water, clean air, and a robust voice in our community's future. Let's make a difference, Miami!
