Close Arlington Public School District due to snow and ice danger
The Issue
During the week of January 26th, Arlington, Virginia is expected to face treacherous conditions following the blizzard that will strike on Sunday, January 25th. The lingering snow and hidden ice pose significant threats to the safety of our children, families, and school faculty commuting in and around the area. Roads, sidewalks, and the routes used for school travel remain perilous, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries that could otherwise be avoided.
Historically, we have seen how quickly conditions like these can escalate into dangerous situations. Past winters have demonstrated the hazards posed by ice, causing numerous accidents and disruptions to daily routines. The potential dangers far outweigh the inconveniences of extending school closures. Prioritizing safety should be our primary concern.
Closures offer our community more than just safety; they allow families the opportunity to spend vital time together, creating memories indoors rather than risking treacherous commutes. Parents and guardians can breathe easier knowing their loved ones are safe from harm, and educators can ensure the environment is secure for learning before returning to regular schedules.
Snow and Vehicle Crash Risk:
A large epidemiological study linked snowfalls to changes in crash patterns in the U.S. (1975–2000): Snow days had fewer fatal crashes than dry days, but more non-fatal injury crashes (about 23% more) and more property-damage-only crashes.
This kind of data helps illustrate that snowy conditions increase overall injury risk, especially non-fatal injuries — relevant when schools remain open and children/parents commute in snow. SOURCE: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15623871/
Risk of Falls and Slips in Snow/Ice:
Research shows snow on the ground increases slip‐related injuries more than three times compared to no-snow conditions; slippery surfaces are a major contributor. SOURCE: https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/19/5/3007
By closing the Arlington Public School District for the full week of January 26th through January 30th, we protect our citizens from unpredictable and severe winter weather hazards. Let us advocate for the safety of our community and give priority to well-being over routine. This proactive measure will ensure that once school resumes, everyone can focus on what truly matters: education, with peace of mind and security.
Sign this petition to urge the Arlington Public School District and relevant authorities to act wisely and promptly by extending school closures for this critical week. Together, let's prioritize safety and well-being for all.
