Clemency for Tania Govea: 20 years is TOO LONG!

Clemency for Tania Govea: 20 years is TOO LONG!
The Issue
My sister-in-law, Tania Govea, is serving a 20-year sentence for a non‑violent drug offense. She was sentenced at age 22, while pregnant with her second child. The day she gave birth was the last day she held that baby—a tragic separation that continues to impact her family.
Tania has now spent nearly 6 years behind bars, over 600 miles away from home, with only infrequent 15-minute phone calls to her young children. Her oldest son will turn 11 this December and has not seen his mother since he was only 5. These boys remain deeply affected by her absence.
Despite the passage of nearly six years, Tania has never posed a danger to anyone. She has taken responsibility for her choices, demonstrated personal growth, and remains committed to rebuilding her life for the sake of her children and her community.
According to the Federal Register, the average Cost of Incarceration Fee (COIF) for a federal inmate in Fiscal Year 2023 was $44,090 annually, or $120.80 per day . Over six years, housing Tania has cost taxpayers over $264,000, a substantial burden with limited societal return.
Tania’s sentence is disproportionate, especially when compared to far more severe crimes that often receive shorter sentences. Mercy and second chances are central to our values, especially when they offer a pathway back to family, stability, and positive contribution to society.
We respectfully ask for your support in advocating for executive clemency. Tania is a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who deserves the opportunity to return home and care for her children.
Please join us in petitioning President Trump to grant clemency and offer Tania the second chance she has earned through accountability and persistence.
