CLEAN UP COAL ASH ON BEACON ISLAND, NY

CLEAN UP COAL ASH ON BEACON ISLAND, NY
The Issue
Beacon Island (New York) is a man-made landfill that a nearby power plant used to dump two million tons of coal fly-ash back in the 1960s and 70s.
Many reports from the DEP and EPA have shown through the years that the toxins from the landfill are being leached into the nearby ground and waterways, posing a health risk to the surrounding communities and local fauna and aquatic habitats.
Now the local government (Port of Albany) has a project in mind for the site and proceeded to clear-cut 82 acres of trees, bypassing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency required review.
The Glenmont residents say that the tree-cutting let fly-ash dust, which can be toxic, into the air, endangering the health of residents for miles around.
We ask that the Landfill is properly "cleaned" or "remediated" before any construction takes place.
This can be accomplished by properly and completely encasing (line and cap) or move the toxic ash to a place where it can be properly encased, as the per the EPA's "Regulations for the safe disposal of coal ash".
Join us in making sure the environment and health and safety of the site's surrounding areas are protected.
