Clean the Ocean Plastic

The Issue

As a high school student, I witness, day in and day out, the devastating effects of plastic pollution on our oceans. It pains me to know that countless marine animals are suffering and dying due to the vast amounts of plastic waste littering their habitats. The thought that our previous generations have contributed significantly to this crisis is disheartening, but I am determined that it's high time for us, the younger generation, to take action, pick up the pieces, and actively work towards ceasing this relentless pollution.
Our oceans are blanketed with millions of tons of plastic waste that not only endanger marine life but also threaten the larger ecosystem upon which they depend. Studies reveal that each year, over 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans, the equivalent of five grocery bags filled with plastic for every foot of coastline worldwide. This deluge of plastic disrupts the natural balance, poisons the marine food chain, and eventually affects us, the human inhabitants of this planet.
With the adverse effects of ocean plastics becoming alarmingly clear, there is a crucial need to bolster anti-pollution efforts and fund large-scale clean-up projects. We call upon the world’s most influential corporations—those with the infrastructure to drive a global circular economy—to put these ideas into action. Leaders like Unilever, which has committed to a 50% reduction in virgin plastic use, and Adidas, which has scaled production of footwear made from recycled ocean plastic, have shown that change is possible.

🤝 Strategic Partnerships for Action
To ensure these initiatives have a lasting impact, we can establish partnerships with the Ocean Conservation Corps. By aligning corporate resources with the boots-on-the-ground expertise of the Corps, we can mobilize a youth workforce by creating dedicated teams of young environmental stewards to lead large-scale coastal cleanups. Furthermore, these partnerships allow us to work directly on restoring the shorelines and marine ecosystems most affected by plastic debris while providing the next generation with the professional training, technical skills, and tools needed to manage and maintain plastic-free coastlines.

Let’s unite in demanding more substantial investments into anti-pollution projects and push for policies that prioritize the health of our oceans. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for our environment, advocating for the protection of marine life, and ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier planet.
