Clean Canals in Kochi

The Issue

Canals in Kochi served as a major source of transportation, livelihood, and infrastructure for flood resilience since times immemorial. However, today most of them are highly polluted and create a significant health risk.

They are present in many places in Kochi. A few examples are:

  1. Edapally Canal (seen from Lulu mall parking)
  2. Thripunithura canal near Venketeshwara school
  3.  Canal in Panampally Nagar
  4. Pandarachirathodu canal

Most people who live near these canals are from low income groups, since people who can afford move out of these areas

This issue is well known and a comprehensive study was completed by Kochi Municipality with clear short-term and medium-term recommendations (see page 54 in the linked study)

But we (citizens) do not have transparency into:

  • Timelines on when the short-term and medium term solutions be implemented
  • A single point of contact responsible for this initiative

In this petition we request the government to provide:

  • Provide a single point of contact for all further questions and communications regarding this issue
  • Timelines on implementing the recommendations in the study
  • Publicly track the progress of the project using a shared google sheet to create transparency
