Clarion CEO rehouse the Mitcham fire victims in empty Clarion homes at High Path Estate!
The Issue
We call on Clare Miller CEO of Clarion Housing Group to rehouse all the Mitcham fire victims from Belgrave Walk to nearby empty Clarion houses, or flats, at High Path Estate south Wimbledon counted on numerous occasions as empty and boarded-up. These vacant homes are in Gilbert Close and Pincott Road.
On the 25th July 2026 at Belgrave Walk in Mitcham 'a row of townhouses converted into flats were involved in the fire.' 'The fire spread across all three floors and into the roof spaces of the buildings' (source: London Fire Brigade).
We are shocked to hear that it is alleged that Clarion are delaying rehousing and support for some fire victims, and allegedly refusing to help students and single people with being rehoused. All residents should be helped whether tenants, leaseholders, or lodgers. Clarion marked its 125th anniversary in 2025 with a record £1.087billion pound turnover, and is the UK's largest social landlord. We are shocked that Clarion are only rehousing residents from the fire in temporary hotel rooms with no cooking, or refrigeration facilities during a hot summer, for who knows how long?
Families are being threatened with eviction from hotel rooms if they install mini fridges. Where meals are not included Clarion will reimburse meal costs of up to £20 per day for each adult and £15 per day for each child per household. A Clarion representative told ITV News that it could take weeks, or months to find new homes for the residents. By contrast in the 1970s a local resident was temporarily rehoused by the local council in a social rent home 'within a day' of the 1970 Calor Gas depot explosion. The July Mitcham fire-destroyed homes are only a short distance from Clarion's recently emptied Gilbert Close block of flats, and a row of Clarion's houses stood empty at Pincott Road for between 3 and 5 years, both at High Path Estate south Wimbledon.
The vacant High Path Estate Pincott Road houses are only due for demolition to make way for a future park as part of a redevelopment scheme many years from completion, and are structurally sound as confirmed by civil engineers in 2011. They would be ideal for the families from the fire, and not affect phases of the estate redevelopment.
We are also concerned that a local Mitcham resident has had no support from Clarion in assisting residents from the Mitcham fire with provisions, and that Clarion's response overall to the fire residents' needs has been heavily criticized. Rehousing the families in actual vacant houses, or vacant flats as soon as possible at High Path Estate would at least go some way to improve the situation of the residents from the Mitcham fire.
