Open Letter to European Commission initiated by Members of Dilemma Mobile Academy
In Georgia civil society is fighting for democracy and the future of Europe.
Flags of Georgia and the European Union are on the frontline of the citizens’ resistance - an image that evokes memories of 1956 in Hungary and even stronger association with Ukrainian Majdan.
It needs to be clearly stated that mass protests happening across the whole Georgia are not just about the election fraud, brutality of the police and persecution of the opposition and activists. Stakes are much higher. Georgian society is on the streets to manifest and protect their civilizational choice, to oppose Putin's Russia and to demonstrate their unwavering will for joining the European Union. Our history, European history, teaches us that we cannot leave alone those who fight.
Describing the current situation, the memory of Georgians recalls the year 1937, beginning of the Stalinist purges that annihilated progressive elites of the country. We cannot wait for history to repeat itself. In an atmosphere of terror, the Georgian Dream imposes brutal force on those who protest against the actions of the oligarch-run party that moves Georgia away from its European future.
The situation calls not only for our gesture of solidarity showing that Georgians are not alone in their struggle. Statements and condemnations are not enough. We call for immediate release of the imprisoned opposition leaders and activists. We call to impose targeted sanctions against oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili and public officials responsible for disproportionately violent crackdown on demonstrators and widespread torture of the detained protesters. We call for all possible actions that would help Georgian society to carry out free and democratic elections.
As civil society, we call on decision-makers of the European Union’s institutions and on the individual member states to take a firm stance on what we see as Georgians’ fight in our pivotal, common battle.
We undersigned represent circles of academics, artists and civil society leaders from Central Europe and the Caucasus coming together to raised our voices in the name of broader European struggle for defining anew our common European identity, values and sense of solidarity. This struggle is happening right now in Georgia!
