City of Ukiah: HANDS OFF our public square!

City of Ukiah: HANDS OFF our public square!
The Issue
A local news report (here, here and here) revealed today (4/27/25) that the City of Ukiah is seriously considering a plan to raze Alex Thomas Plaza, the city's sole town square, so that the City-owned site can be "developed for commercial purposes."
Deputy City Manager Shannon Riley stated this plan is "a serious possibility." According to the report, Riley said "she envisions a new Thomas Plaza occupying the historic heart of downtown where the courthouse now stands." In other words the plan appears to be the city's "solution" to the question of what will happen to Ukiah's soon-to-be empty old courthouse building.
The existence of a plan was acknowledged by Mendocino County 2nd district supervisor Maureen Mulheren, who stated it was "too soon to start public meetings and discussions" about the proposed demolition of the plaza.
We the undersigned say ABSOLUTELY NO to any planned destruction of Alex Thomas Plaza, the only public green space in central Ukiah and the town's primary venue for outdoor events, music performances, the weekly farmer's market and more.
We are asking the five members of the Ukiah City Council to affirm their commitment to PROTECT AND PRESERVE our town's only public square, Alex Thomas Plaza, from destruction.
