Build a statue honoring Troy native and American great John Lewis
The Issue
Legendary Georgia congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis was one of the true American greats. This petition calls on the city of Troy, Alabama to build a statue in his honor following his death on July 17.
Lewis is a recipient of the Presidential medal of freedom, the highest honor a civilian in the United States can achieve.
Lewis was an original Freedom Rider, enduring violent attacks across the south in an effort to force state governments to enforce federal law that said segregated public transportation was unconstitutional. Lewis later helped lead 600 protesters that were attacked in Selma on what is known today as Bloody Sunday.
A centerpiece in the civil rights movement of the 1960’s, Lewis continued his fight to the halls of Congress where he served for 33 years until his death.
The city of Troy unveiled a portrait and historical marker in his honor in 2018. In a town that features a confederate monument prominently displayed downtown, I call on Troy to erect a statue honoring a man who fought for the basic human rights of his fellow African American.
