Bring Back the Culture Clash Record Roof!

The Issue

Culture Clash Records is a local record store in Toledo, Ohio. For five years the store has had vinyl records on their roof. This past month the City of Toledo claimed that their roof was a "nuisance" and made them take it down. The City of Toledo is plagued with blight and vacant houses that need to be demolished, yet they have the time to make a locally owned store take down a local landmark. We are hoping that this petition will make the City of Toledo reconsider their decision and possibly bring the "record roof" back.

Responded
Thank you, all, for your comments regarding Culture Clash Records' roof. I am always inspired by the civil and thoughtful comments from passionate people such as yourselves. The first I heard of this was when Ch. 13 called to say the store had received a "nuisance" notice from the city. I have a policy that if someone complains about something, there's usually two sides to every story. So...I investigate then I will talk with and/or send out a friendly notice that a complaint has been registered with my office. This complaint did not come through my office, unfortunately. The city is reactionary and thus responded to a complaint. I've talked with our director of Neighborhoods about this. The department is doing their job in responding to a complaint and using their judgment about the alleged nuisance. I, too, have felt that the records added a cool component to the business corridor. It really reflected the culture clash that is their moniker. However, we have to respond to the nuisance complaints and, like an ailing roof on a house, or overgrown lawns, a lack of maintenance has made the display less attractive, in my opinion. Opinions being the subjective animal they are, I thus respect all of the comments from anyone who likes the way the roof has become. If Culture Clash wanted to replace the melted records with new ones, I (and the city) would have no concerns. In fact I would welcome it. Thank you, again, for your comments, and please know that they have all been read and conveyed to our administration. I will continue to maintain a strong, pro-business approach, particularly for small, locally-owned businesses such as Culture Clash. If anyone would like to arrange a "Replace the Records" effort for the business, I would be happy to contribute part of my collection and bring a hammer and some nails.
