The Seattle city government has a one-time opportunity to protect the Pike Place Market entrance from development forever.

The public outcry over proposed high-rise developments at the Hahn building and the Showbox combined has convinced the city council that the issue of development threatening the Pike Place Market entrance is larger than any one building. This is a problem that requires a larger solution.
The details are uncertain – but what’s clear is that the Seattle city council is considering some sort of action to protect the entrance to Pike Place Market from development.
The form of this protection is up to the council, but two possibilities:
1) Extend the existing market historic area boundaries to include the entire intersection at 1stand Pike and the Showbox
2) Re-zone the East side of 1stAve between Pike and Union to prevent high-rise buildings from encroaching on the market entrance
Now is the time to make your voice heard.
Email the City of Seattle government and tell them you want the entrance to Pike Place Market permanently protected from high-rise development by preserving the existing scale, symmetry and light-filled character of the market entrance forever.
