Good news! At last night’s City Council meeting, the Watershed presented their request to postpone the Log House Landing project until more study and evaluation of potential solutions can take place. The Council agreed with this request and voted unanimously to postpone any action until additional information can be gathered. This is excellent news and was what we had hoped for since the Mayor raised this as a possible course of action last month. Not only will this allow time to study the extent of the erosion problem, but it will provide an opportunity to carefully observe the site and to research alternative solutions. We have identified several promising surfaces that have the appearance of a traditional class 5 gravel road, but are far more resistant to erosion. Several of the Council members have expressed an interest in learning more about these alternatives. Your emails and unflagging attendance at important Council meetings has had a significant effect on this positive turn of events. One of the Council members told me that in his 10+ years with the City in various capacities, he has never received (not even close to) as many concerned, articulate and respectful emails about any issue. It is very gratifying to know that the voice of the citizens has resonated with the Scandia Council. Well done, supporters! Over the spring and summer months, we believe that the Watershed, the City and the community will work together to find solutions that reduce erosion, improve water quality and better preserve this historic and ecologically sensitive road and landing. In the meantime, the Watershed will proceed in identifying funding for the boat ramp improvements, an area that everyone agrees needs immediate attention. Updates will follow later in the year.
