Dear All:
We need more help, please act NOW before it’s too late!!! It’s your home and future. Contact information is listed in the bottom.
The city of San Jose is trying to put lots homeless people in your area and they knew there were a lot people against the idea. The Mar 1 community meeting was originally postponed due to the larger number of residents, now they cancelled the meeting completely. There is no transparency! You need to make sure your voice is heard!
Summary of major concerns:
1. The city is lacking transparency in choosing the site for homeless shelters. There were originally 11 candidate districts for this homeless shelter. Currently only district 3 and 7 are left, due to the strong objection from councilors and residents in other districts. Although the site is in district 3, not only residents from district 3, but many others from district 4 are affected. Throughout our rally, we noticed that many potentially affected residents have NO idea about this program. This, to a great extent, reflects that the city has not properly informed people from district 4 of this program.
2. The location is so close to dense residential area with schools and park closeby, homeless has a high rate of drug abuse and criminal background, it’s inappropriate to have those “tiny homes” so close to the residential, schools and park.
3. The location is so close the new bart station, a lot people takes bart alone at night, it creates safety issues when people walk alone with so many homeless around. No homeless shelter should be built on top of it, which is putting more pressure on local residents, police and other administrations. Would the major, the council who voted yes and BHC be held personal responsible for any incidents due to their negligence?
4. It’s not cost effective, the spending is almost irresponsible - the money should be better spent to help homeless. Considering the total money to be spent for “tiny homes’, the BHC salaries, future maintenance fees, the cost will be very significant. There should be a better and cost effective way to help homeless, such as give homeless some hotel vouchers / food stamps in certain area.
5. Every year, we pay a lot of property tax and sales tax to the city and county, however, the city of San Jose seems don’t really care for its residents, it only hired a minimum policeman to investigate home burglary crimes, a lot of them unsolved or they are too busy to solve it and many cars have broken windows. If those tiny homes are in our neighborhood, who will be responsible for all the loss and personal injuries? Would the major, the council who voted yes and BHC should be held personal responsible for any incidents due to their negligence?
6. With so close to the bart, it also creates a safety issue for homeless as well.
7. This location is very close to Bart and it will encourage more and more homeless from different cities (such as San Francisco) to come to San Jose, as such, it will create a vicious cycle and make the situation worse.
Please call AND email the City of San Jose Mayor and City Council ASAP today to share your concerns, we need all the help we can get before it’s too late!
The city will host a meeting to have the final decision for BHC project location. Here are the contact information for the decision makes. Let them hear the real voices from local residents!
