As residents of Redondo Beach, we are lucky to live so close to the beautiful Pacific Ocean and enjoy recreation and fresh air each day. For the many people that call Redondo Beach home, there is also a sense that park space and green space is limited.
At 10,769 persons per square mile, Redondo Beach is among the most densely-populated South Bay cities. According to an L.A. County needs assessment, Redondo Beach has limited park acreage. We have a desperate need to improve our existing park spaces and provide amenities for people to grow food and build a sense of community. Nearby cities like Torrance and Hermosa Beach host beautiful community gardens thriving with plants and active members. Redondo Beach has none.
Renewed efforts to create a community garden for Redondo Beach started in the summer of 2020: The Redondo Beach Community Gardens project was established, and a committee and newsletter were created. The COVID-19 pandemic made clear how crucial it is to grow food and develop neighborly connections for food security and knowledge-sharing.
The community gardens effort is an initiative under South Bay Parkland Conservancy to work with the City of Redondo Beach to establish a community garden for the city. Our project was highlighted in a feature article in the Easy Reader.
In Fall 2020, the RBCG committee presented at meetings for council members Nils Nehrenheim and Todd Loewenstein and established connections with other council members. In October 2020 we presented to the city's Recreation and Parks Commission who approved a motion to bring our project before city council.
Since October we have been asking to present to city council and be included on a meeting agenda. We have the momentum and the team in place to move this forward and we have heard so much support from residents throughout Redondo Beach. Our community would benefit from a community garden in countless ways.
Please show your support for a Redondo Beach Community Garden by signing this petition. We hope to show city staff and council the overwhelming support our residents have for a community garden, and that this is a priority. Our community has an imperative to join other South Bay cities, increase access to green space and food-growing spaces, and fully realize a vision for a community garden in Redondo Beach. Thank you!
