Make Inland Valley Humane Society provide kennel cards for its animals and list them on their website and adoption search sites such as Pet Harbor and Petfinder
The Issue
The Inland Valley Humane Society (IVHSSPCA) provides contracted animal control and shelter services to the cities of Pomona, Chino, Chino Hills, Claremont, Diamond Bar, La Verne, Montclair, Ontario and San Dimas.
IVHS does NOT post kennel cards nor list any but a token few of its animals on standard listing services such as Pet Harbor and Petfinder or on their Facebook page and web site which often has broken links to the few animals they do list. This results in no one knowing about the animals who then disappear and are killed. Emails and calls on the animals go unanswered when we send them to: Misty Reiss, Shelter Services Supervisor, 500 Humane Way, Pomona CA 91766, Phone 909-623-9777 ext. 612 Fax 909-623-0432, mreiss@ivhsspca.org
IVHS is failing to perform its duties under its contract with the City in a competent manner. IVHS has deplorable customer service. Also, there is no “rescue only” category for injured or special needs animals. IVHS does not reach out to rescues, the animals are just killed. IVHS literally does not make readily available any information about the animals that are within its custody. The most basic information such as what animals are even housed there, their breeds, age, sex, etc. are not posted anywhere online! Not only does IVHS not have the animals online for public viewing (forget it if you are trying to find a lost animal), they don't even have the information available at the animals' kennel! IVHS does have a website and it does purport to have a "dog gallery." However, it lists about 15 dogs on there from who knows when. There are many, many animals beyond the handful that are posted. I saw over 150 dogs on a recent visit. Animals enter and die at IVHS without anyone even knowing that they were there.
IVHS' adoption process amounts to the following. Potential adopter cannot first view the available animals online and must visit in person to even know what animals are there. Potential adopter wanders through the shelter to see if she sees any dogs she likes. She goes to kennel 35 and sees a black and white dog. She looks for a kennel card and cannot find one. She doesn't even know the sex of the animal or its age. In order to get any information about the animal, she must go back to the front to make an inquiry. She must do this for every animal she is interested in. Many times, multiple animals are kenneled together. Then, it becomes a guessing game as to which animal in kennel 35 she is referring to. It's completely inefficient and the highest form of incompetence. Furthermore, volunteers who use their personal time to visit the shelter and take pictures of the animals cannot effectively network them because they cannot provide basic information regarding the animals' gender, age, availability date, etc.
This is the most basic information that any potential adopter would want to know, but it is inexplicably not readily available. Unfortunately, the animals are the ones to suffer from IVHS' incompetence, laziness, and neglect. Many animals lose their lives because not only does no one know they're even there, but the hurdles that any potential adopter must go through to get the most basic information is a life sucking endeavor.
Perhaps the most ridiculous aspect of IVHS is that it fails to list its animals online, but it has the resources to have someone respond to all of its negative Yelp reviews and to post on Twitter. Why doesn't it have that person spend time trying to get the animals seen and adopted rather than responding to negative Yelp reviews?
IVHS loves to paint itself as a caring organization. It has a pretty website filled with its good deeds. However, an animal shelter that deliberately fails to provide information about its animals to help them get adopted cannot claim to care.
There has been more than one case recently of pets being admitted to IVHS, reaching their hold period, and being put to sleep without ever having been listed on their website or marketed as available for adoption. Please help us make them accountable.
**UPDATE** 3/4/15 at 9am PST the IVHS web site lists only 4 available dogs. Two are no longer at the shelter. Princess, Control Number I1225488 the Shepherd, was killed over a week ago.
