Stop the City of Pewaukee from mandating hookup to city water at the cost of residents
The Issue
We need your help urgently! Construction is about to begin, and we need to deliver this petition fast to stop the City of Pewaukee from strong-arming exorbitant costs on residents.
The City of Pewaukee has development plans to convert all well and septic users to the use of city sewer and water at the cost of the residents. They have been selecting a few roads at a time, making this too big of a fight for a small neighborhood. The total cost passed to residents in many cases has and will surpass $30,000 per household, that you will need to pay or get charged interest on the amount until you can pay it. Right now, Oak St., Lincoln Ave., Peninsula Dr., and Chicago Ave are under attack. We need your help to stop this project and future projects, because the rest of you with wells will be next.
The costs being forced on impacted citizen households are unprecedented for the city. While this neighborhood already has septic, the plans are to dig up the road and install a water main. The main expense will come in the form of an assessment of $17,524 per household for a road repair and water main installation. This will also be considered an improvement on the properties and raise their taxes respectively.
The costs were disclosed to residents in a misleading letter 2 weeks before they planned to start construction.
$10,753.68 – Water Main (residents portion of construction)
$4104.46 – Water Service (this means your connection point in the main)
$14,983.39 – Road Reconstruction (capped at $2684 per resident)
$3,389.13 – Curb Construction (an additional fee also capped at $2684 per resident)
The city and the Common Council published incorrect costs, were not transparent with residents, and failed to disclose out of pocket fees. The fees are conservatively estimated to exceed an additional cost of $20,000 per household which include:
$4885 – Connection fee with an additional $75 permit fee
$13,500 – estimated cost to hire a licensed contractor to dig and connect their homes to the city water lateral point
$1500-$3000 – estimated cost to abandon and seal existing wells with DNR
 Property tax hikes
The costs disclosed to residents were misleading by listing the fees and saying there was a cap on the cost, making it look like $2684 would be the total charged to residents. While a $2684 fee is unpleasant, it did not upset the community or make anyone take action. When residents investigated and understood it was actually closer to $30,000 or more, we dug in and found this is the plan for the whole community.
This is a huge amount of money for anyone, and couldn't be imposed on families at a worse time when people are losing their jobs and homes during COVID-19. Not to mention, why aren't our tax dollars paying for our roads? We not only need to stop this project, but stop the city from forcing extra services on residents that we already have, and find a way to pay for the maintenance and upgrades with tax dollars, not handing the bill to the residents of public roads. Please sign this petition so we can stop the City, put the brakes on, and get information out to ALL residents about what is going on so we can make the decision as a community. And if the City still doesn't listen, stand together to be heard!
Please follow your Pewaukee community groups on social media for more information. There is also a common council meeting July 20 that we hope you will all come to attend to fight this. We hope we can delay construction until then with your signatures.
