Allow Backyard Fires in Pembroke, ON
The Issue
Backyard fires are great opportunities for family bonding, getting to know neighbours, and a wonderful way to spend quality time with friends. Canadian summers are short, and not everyone has a cottage to escape to, or is able to go camping for various reasons. Residents of the City of Pembroke should be allowed to enjoy small, controlled fires in their backyards. Our surrounding communities of Petawawa and the Township of Laurentian Valley both allow residents to enjoy recreational fires after obtaining permits.
The City of Pembroke does not allow recreational open air fires with the exception of an arbitrary rule allowing property owners along the Ottawa, Indian, and Muskrat Rivers to do so. In July of 2019, city council considered changing this by-law, and sought input from our community. 63% of respondents were in favour of allowing open air backyard fires. Despite the majority of the community being in favour, 4 council members voted against making a change. Instead, council voted in favour of a motion to consider developing public fire pits at Riverside Park.
The Canadian government is advising us all to stay home, and limit our contact with people outside of our immediate families at this time. Public gatherings are not currently allowed. The summer months are coming and what better way to enjoy the warmer months than roasting marshmallows by starlight in your own backyard?
By signing this petition, I agree that all property owners within Pembroke should be allowed to obtain an open air fire burning permit.
