This petition supports the plan for a paved trail system in Miramichi. Timely federal Covid-related infrastructure funding has recently become available. Such funding, could help furnish the beginnings of a trail, and subsequently improve the health, well-being and safety of Miramichiers in so many ways. There are many benefits to a paved trail system, including safe active transportation, cycling tourism, and of course the physical and mental well-being that comes with access to these trails. The paved option allows for safe and accessible walking, walking with a stroller or wheelchair, running, cycling, skateboarding, scootering, and rollerblading/skiing- a wonderful variety of sport to suit the diverse needs of active Miramichiers, or those who wish to be!

Given the impact of the pandemic, the need to be active and spend time outdoors has become very important to our overall health. We see other communities like Fredericton, Moncton and the Acadian Peninsula building a culture of active leisure and active transport through their paved trail systems…and we need in on this trend! Even if it is just a small stretch of 10-15k paved trail to begin with and a master plan to see it grow.

We feel Miramichi has ideal acreage given our beautiful, expansive river. Former railways and skidoo trails may also be considered. Although the pandemic has presented many challenges, we believe it has also presented numerous opportunities. Federal funding is available until Sept. 30, 2021. The time to act is now.
