Why this petition matters

To the City of Melville,

Mainstream science now confirms that the entire globe must take immediate, decisive action if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change in our own lifetimes. We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions drastically by 2030, or face dire consequences. Individuals, corporations and every level of government must play their part.

That's why we are calling on the City of Melville to declare a climate emergency.

More than 60 per cent of Australians agree with the sentiment that "Global warming is a serious and pressing problem." In WA the councils of Vincent, Fremantle, Bunbury, Swan and Denmark have listened to the people and declared a climate emergency. Elsewhere, another 1030 councils and regions have done the same.

After decades of inaction we now have only a handful of years left to drastically reduce emissions, lest our world warm to the point where humans face an existential threat.  We cannot wait until the next Federal election. We need action at all levels of government.

We are calling on the City of Melville to respect the will of the people and embrace climate action. We request that you declare a climate emergency.  This would demonstrate a concrete commitment, a willingness to stand together and fight to prevent the largest threat of our times. We then need you to follow through with the necessary resources and action to fully address the crisis at emergency speed.

Save us from a climate crisis, before it’s too late. Declare a climate emergency, today.
