Ease restrictions on bylaws & rules for street food vendors in Kamloops.
The Issue
Street food brings many benefits to Kamloops. People feel more engaged in city life and are proud to live and work in a community that is willing to become know for great food options. Kamloops street food had the ability to turn barren areas, such as the Spirit Square, into gathering places. They have the ability to travel to lesser-developed areas and bring new food choices to residents and workers in the area where brick-and-mortar restaurants have not yet opened or where lunch and dinner options are limited. People are ready and willing to welcome street food vendors into many areas of town and treat them as a feature to keep tenants and employees happy and encourage businesses to locate there. More over, food trucks are the “start-ups” of the food business. They give entrepreneurs the ability to build a business with lower risk and allowing the market place to decide.
What street food vendors are looking for in Kamloops is more accessibility, but not necessarily Downtown, but where Kamloopsians congregate: MacArthur Island, Thompson Rivers University, Tournament Capital Centre, Interior Savings Centre, etc. They aren’t looking for a handout or an unfair competitive advantage to other food service providers, rather the ability to gain access to a market place that has long called for this type of food service provider.
We believe that Kamloops is a vibrant dynamic city, but needs a gentle push in the right direction to keep that image alive.
We are calling on the City of Kamloops to create a model this year that can be a win for street food vendors, brick & mortar restaurants and consumers a like. We believe it is important for the City of Kamloops to take action immediately and to not make excuses.
