Indep. Mayor Kurtz/Presiding Officer Cuy. Cty. Mayors/City Mgrs. Assn: Demand State put regional moratorium on killing, explore nonlethal options for deer
The Issue
CALLING ALL NORTHEAST OHIOANS! Right now, Indep., OH, Mayor Gregory Kurtz is stalling efforts by more humane-minded mayors and city managers across Cuyahoga County to demand the State of Ohio Div. of Wildlife explore NONlethal (90% effective birth control and/or a moratorium on all killing to allow biological carrying capacity to prevail) on a regional, NE Ohio basis. Mayor Kurtz, who wants to keep bow hunting in his community, recently charged another mayor to form a new committee exploring what other communities are doing, meaning killing. Kurtz knows that the majority of other mayors/managers -- and their citizens -- disapprove of lethal methods, so he's deliberately thwarting an organized effort to pressure the State for a regional solution. Immuno-contraception/birth control is affordable and has been used with 90% effectiveness (PZP, a protein, NOT a hormone) on deer and other mammals in states outside Ohio, including in New York. Ohio DOW -- whose board of directors is comprised of hunters -- makes 50%+ annual revenue off hunting/nuisance permits, which is why state officials won't allow birth control. The state admits to deliberately maintaining large, stable deer populations to to satisfy hunters who comprise only six percent of Ohioans. State officials and employees' jobs and 401(k)s depend on the hunting/nuisance permits at the expense of hudreds of thousands of maimed and killed and deer annually. It's known as "maximum sustainable yield" for profit. HUNTING ACTUALLY CAUSES ACCIDENTS AND MORE BROWSING! Right now, our county/region of NE Ohio is poised to demand regional birth control on white-tailed deer -- a precedent-setting solution! Can we really trust a state agency that was recently under investigation by OH Inspector General because 16 Div. of Wildlife employees illegally poached deer WHILE ON THE CLOCK COLLECTING THEIR PAYCHECKS? Obviously, DOW and Mayor Kurtz, a hunter, cannot be trusted to keep us, or our deer, safe. Public Trust Doctrine states wildlife belongs to everyone, not just the six percent who hunt.
