YOUR DRINKING WATER
The City of Highland Park is in the process of upgrading its Water Treatment Plant, a critical facility that provides clean water to over 100,000 people in Highland Park and five neighboring communities.
In the course of the upgrade, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and construction engineers recommended restricting public access around the Water Treatment Plant. They noted that no other water plant on Lake Michigan has such unlimited access to the public.
The City shared these security concerns with the Park District due to the potential impact to the Park District's boating operations. The Park District agreed that the safety of our water was paramount and made plans to move their boating operations to the area north of the water plant in May of 2015.
Over the last few days, the City has received many questions about future boating operations in Highland Park. While the Park District has not yet shared the details of their plans with us, we invited them to join us at the next City Council meeting on Monday to answer any questions the public may have. Unfortunately, they will not be joining us on Monday and instead, have suggested that the public come to their Board meeting on Tuesday, September 23 at 6:00 at West Ridge Center, 636 Ridge Road.
The lake is an incredible asset and we as a community are so fortunate to be able to enjoy it. Providing clean, safe water to drink is the City's responsibility. Providing the ability to play by, in and on the lake is the Park District's responsibility. We can do both.
If you have any questions or comments concerning boating at Park Ave. beach, please contact the Park District at (847) 831-3810 or by clicking here. Questions concerning the Water Treatment Plant? Contact Dave Knapp, City Manager at 847-926-1000 or dknapp@Cityhpil.com.
