N AEdinburgh, SCT, United Kingdom

Oct 5, 2016
Six months after the residents first asked for Edinburgh Council’s Transport Committee to come to Roseburn and see what the impact of the cycle track would be for themselves, Cllr Lesley Hinds and the transport spokespeople from the various political parties, along with the local ward councillors, finally came to Roseburn last night to see for themselves the difference the track would make. They were part of the Stakeholders Group set up by the Council to redesign the track in the face of huge opposition from across the city to the Council’s plans.
The Roseburn traders put on a special display for them with many shops displaying posters indicating that they did not want the track running in front of their businesses. George Rendall, the owner of Art et Facts on Roseburn Terrace and Osman Simsek of Vigo Deli’s are representing Roseburn traders on the Stakeholder Group. They worked with local campaigner Pete Gregson to get posters into shop windows making clear that traders wanted a “Revised Option B”, this being the second choice on the table – to route cyclists along Roseburn Place instead, allowing those exiting from the Park a safer route to Russell Road and all points west.
Local businesses Vigo’s Deli, Roseburn Shoe Repairs, Roseburn Café, Scotbet, Roseburn Bar, Thallon Soulis, Art et Facts, Clancy’s Estate Agents, Simon Scott Collectables, Ikina Hair, Eat’n’Joy, PC Doctor, Turkish Barbers and Smoothies Beauty Clinic all displayed posters asking Councillors to consider their trade if they lose their parking and suffer worse congestion. The shopkeepers have the support of the 6,000 residents who signed the petition against the track, calling for the Council to make better use of the National Cycle Route 1 instead of narrowing the A8 along West Coates and Haymarket, with the inevitable impact on parking and traffic flow.
The “revised option B” would see neither Roseburn Place nor Roseburn Gardens closed to through traffic and the junction at Russell Road and Roseburn Street remodelled with traffic lights to improve traffic flow and cycling safety.
After walking round the area, the Stakeholder group moved to Murrayfield Church Hall where they sat round and considered their findings. They are due to visit Haymarket on Thursday evening, where local trader David Drummond will be representing local businesses. The Council want the Stakeholder Group to bring forward recommendations on the route by Christmas.
