Keep Chula Vista a family friendly community.

The Issue

The City of San Diego has to relocate one of their homeless shelters and instead of relocating it within San Diego City limits, they have decided to send it to Chula Vista.

Chula Vista’s communities are predominantly minority and immigrant families. Our neighborhoods are in need of new infrastructure and business revitalization. A homeless shelter will stop any hope for this and bring more crime to the area.

Chula Vista’s homelessness population grew as the City of San Diego began targeting their homeless population and began pushing them south.

This is true social injustice. Chula Vista is NOT San Diego’s dumping ground. These politicians know Chula Vista’s demographics and know they will have less of a fight. Cleaning up San Diego by sacrificing the future of Chula Vista should NEVER be an option.

Please step up for the future of our community and the children we are raising in our neighborhoods. Let our council know we will not cower down to San Diego.

Dear Neighbors, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns about the homeless bridge shelter spring tent and Coleman trailer donations being considered by your city council and mayor for acceptance at tonight’s council meeting, items #10 & #11. If we vote to accept the donation from the Lucky Duck Foundation, we will still have to apply for grant funding to maintain and operate it, and then all contracts would go out for bid (per government rules). This will take some time. The shelter, if accepted, will not be delivered with residents attached to it via established residency. It will likely be packed up and delivered to a local city-owned yard. This donation is in no way a relocation of homeless populations from one area of the county into Chula Vista. It is a physical donation of materials for Chula Vista to use, for the benefit of Chula Vistans. Please note that if federal and state grants are not received to cover the costs of area preparation, infrastructure, outsourced operations and maintenance, our city will not be using our General Fund to subsidize this bridge shelter. We need to protect our General Fund budget for our city’s essential services, and we will. The area and establishment of a bridge shelter, proposed location at Faivre and Broadway, south of Main Street, is far from schools, parks, retail, and located adjacent to the Otay River Bottom. The Otay River Bottom has housed an unsheltered population for decades (since the Vietnam War). In recent years, this section of the Otay River Bottom has been rife with arson, human trafficking, narcotics, felony assaults, murder, grand theft, and all of the filth, debris, and unsanitary conditions you can possibly imagine. It is a very dangerous place, even for our police and firefighters. It is possible that a bridge shelter with federally subsidized, contracted case management, sanitation, counseling, mental health services, and stability can help transition some of the unsheltered population, currently living at the southern boundary between Chula Vista and South San Diego into a better, healthier, and safer future. Those are my initial thoughts. I have submitted an extensive list of questions to the city manager for his staff to address during their meeting tonight. Again, thank you for writing, for taking the time to express your fears and concerns. We on the council work for you as your elected representatives. It is our job to keep all residents safe, protected, and at peace in our beautiful Chula Vista. Hope you’re well, and thanks again for advocating for your beliefs and hopes for our great city.
