The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on The City of Charlottetown to approve the request to raise the Palestinian flag at City Hall on November 29, 2025, in recognition of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

This date, recognized by the United Nations since 1977, affirms the global commitment to justice, equality, and the right of all peoples to self-determination — values that our city should proudly uphold.

A request for this flag-raising ceremony was submitted on September 8, 2025. The City’s response stated that the request “did not meet the eligibility requirements” under Section 9.0 of the Protocol Policy, yet no clarification has been provided on which requirement, despite multiple follow-ups. We believe the City’s denial of the request and the lack of transparency stands in contrast to the City’s stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and civic fairness.

We, the undersigned, are making it clear: The City must stand with its people — all of its people.

Communities across Canada and the world have raised the Palestinian flag in recognition of this day and we are asking the City of Charlottetown to join in. The Arab, Muslim, Palestinian, and pro-Palestine communities in our city deserve equal treatment and respect as other cultural and national communities who have been granted similar recognition by the City.

The City’s protocol policy says that it “welcomes requests to raise flags or illuminate City Hall to raise awareness for important causes and initiatives to Charlottetown residents.”

Raising the Palestinian flag would send a powerful message: that our city truly cares about social justice and is not indifferent to the suffering of the Palestinian people amid an ongoing genocide.

A flag raising is not merely symbolic. It is a public affirmation of our shared responsibility to acknowledge the injustices Palestinian communities have and continue to endure.
