Save Charleston's Historic 80 Ashley!

The Issue

We are requesting a Use Variance for this property from the City of Charleston’s Zoning Board to see this building restored to its status as a source of neighborhood pride!

Based on feedback from the city's Zoning Administrator, they seem to be willing to  approve the building for an office space, or send it to the chopping block for a complete demolition. We need your help to show them there's another option...

What we're proposing is a low-impact cafe serving breakfast and lunch alongside a garden shop filled with plants and trees and flowers-- a quiet, respectful and beautiful gathering place for Harleston villagers in a setting that will nestle into the fabric of the neighborhood.

We have offered a number of restrictions connected to our application to be mindful of our neighbors:

  • permissible for a café and garden shop only
  • limited capacity and no amplified music outside
  • limited hours of operation
  • alcohol beverage license tied to morning operating hours
  • other engineering efforts to make sure we are operating a low-impact cafe for the immediate neighbors including purchasing an air scrubber to eliminate all baking odors, increasing the height of the perimeter walls to offer screening and sound proofing, irrigation and landscaping choices that absorb acoustics, clean the air and alleviate flooding, among other things.

Signing this petition will help show the city what we've heard already from so many of you: you love this building and you want to see it thrive once again.

This building belongs to the neighborhood, and it should be for the neighborhood to enjoy. Let's do our part, as neighbors, to lend a helping hand!
