The Issue

With the recent food shortages and the continued rise in grocery prices, the idea of backyard chickens makes more and more sense. There should be no question to a family raising their own chickens to provide fresh eggs every morning. The benefits to having a flock of your own is endless. They provide compost for vegetable gardens further aiding in self sufficiency and independence from our crippled food supply chain. Chickens are extremely therapeutic for the elderly, those with anxiety and depression, as well as the special needs community. A family with their own flock would also have the ability to teach countless lessons to their children. I could go on forever about the benefits of 4-H clubs for kids... Yet our city denies us this GOD given right to provide for ourselves. Chaining us to the dependency of major food companies that inject our food with hormones while they stand crowded, knee deep in feces and spray our produce with harmful chemicals in pursuit of the almighty dollar. Today, we stand together against this injustice. We ask our Cape Coral City leaders to change the ordinances allowing backyard flocks. A right that we should never have to ask for in the first place. Election is coming up. If they won’t listen to us now, we will elect someone that will.
