City of Boynton Beach Fire Officer Mark Sohn for Causing Death of Stanley Davis, III

The Issue

Stanley Davis, Jr. and Shannon Thompson, the Parents of 13-Year-Old Stanley Davis III, Demands that the City of Boynton Beach Fires Officer Mark Sohn: the officer that conducted an unlawful high speed police chase that killed their son.

Mark Sohn’s history as a police officer is one of destruction and devastation to Black lives – his City of Boynton Beach employment file contains six findings of unlawful vehicle pursuits, several incidents of insubordination, a finding that he engaged in overt racism for using a racial slur, and he has now caused the death of three Black persons including 5 year-old Jayden Reardon and 37 year-old Cyrus Deal by conducting dangerous and unlawful high speed pursuits.  In addition, there is video evidence of Mark Sohn beating a restrained Black person that is the subject of an ongoing civil matter and he had another former civil matter after he sicked a dog on a fully restrained person.

The department’s policy on conducting high speed pursuits is clear: a police chase is to be initiated only if the person fleeing has committed a forcible felony such as a murder, manslaughter, sexual battery, carjacking, home-invasion robbery, arson or kidnapping.   The City of Boynton Beach and Mark Sohn cannot justify his pursuit of a 7th grader on a dirt bike because he was not committing a forcible felony. Now, 13-year-old Stanley Davis III has lost his life, leaving behind two heartbroken parents. We demand that the Boynton Beach Police Department terminate Officer Sohn immediately, before he reaches the 20-year mark as a police officer and kills a fourth person.”
