Have a permanent, synthetic turf, Cricket facility in Barrie.
The Issue
Cricket is one of the world's most popular sport and Canada's first national sport. There has been an exponential growth of cricket lovers, individuals, and teams, looking to play Cricket in the City of Barrie.
Currently there is only one, temporary, clay Cricket Pitch, shared with a baseball diamond at Maitland Park, in Barrie. This facility was developed, by the City as a temporary solution, over a decade ago, to test the interest and growth potential of the sport in the community. As it stands, we are facing the following challenges:
- Maitland Park is a significantly small field for the game of cricket. Often balls are hit into homes or on the road.
- Unmaintained clay pitches, when uneven after one downpour of rain, make the play of cricket unsafe.
- As it is shared with a Baseball Diamond, there are frequent availability challenges.
- The field has large bushes on two sides, where a lot of expensive balls get lost.
- The field is used in winters for tobogganing. Large activities and foot movement creates uneven soil during summer months.
- Excessive water logging occurs after a rainfall, and it could take days before, play of cricket can be rescheduled.
- Clay surface/pitch requires constant and excessive maintenance, which in turn costs a lot of time and energy for the upkeep of the facility.
- Due to Barrie's weather, Clay Pitches are ready to play only by late June and only allow an average of 8 weeks of play (weather permitting)
A Synthetic Turf Pitch facility on the right field, can eliminate all the above concerns, and has been widely, used in other parts of the province.
We at Barrie Cricket League Inc. are looking for your support, in the rapid development of the sport of cricket, by requesting the City of Barrie, to provide and maintain a permanent, synthetic turf pitch, cricket facility, by the next summer season.
