We are nine days into our effort to collecting the 20,000 signatures we need to put an ordinance on the November ballot to reinstate the ban on public camping.
In the spirit of transparency, we will regularly update how we are doing.
We have already collected 2,000+ signatures, which is more than 10% of our goal!
If you take four months and divide that by 20,000 signatures, we need to collect about 133 signatures each day, every day.
We are well ahead of our pace.
But now we need to sustain it.
Remember, online petition signatures don't count for getting on the ballot.
The single best way you can help us to to download, sign, and mail in the petition. The single signature version is here. The multiple signature version is here.
We can only use signatures from City of Austin residents.
Part of how we got off to such a great start is that we used more than 20 volunteers and a few paid canvassers to collect signatures at the polls on Tuesday. This cost us money and we will need more to reach our goal.
To anyone who has contributed so far, please know that we are grateful.
If you can contribute to our effort, please do so securely right here.
As you know, our ordinance petition is now available for signatures from Austin residents and we are well ahead of the pace we need to qualify for the November ballot.
Our ordinance does THREE important things:
1) Reinstates the ban on public camping citywide.
2) Restores the sit/lie ordinance downtown and extends it to the UT campus and surrounding student housing area.
3) Bans panhandling at night citywide from 7pm-7am.
Thanks,
Matt Mackowiak & Cleo Petricek
