The Issue

There is a hatefulness within our Canadian borders and it lingers within the most unexpected places: A pizza shop in Airdrie, Alberta called “Pauls Pizza of Airdrie”.

I, and other Canadians/residents of the Airdrie/Calgary region are calling upon the mayor and council to review this business, their values, and the treatment of their customers. “Pauls Pizza” has spread harmful ideologies and stereotypes against Indigenous peoples, women, and children. More specifically, the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement.

The owners, Farouk Elsaghir and Hamdi Elsaghir should be held accountable and/or formally reviewed of how the conduct their business and of their licensing.

Their actions that have taken place over social media promotes harmful, hateful, and divisive stereotypes that are not only offensive to many Canadians, but it can be dangerous.

I am asking the City of Airdrie to take the following actions:

• Licensing Oversight: Conduct a formal review of the business’s license to determine if their public conduct violates city bylaws regarding community standards or "Good Neighbour" expectations.

• Public Accountability: Reiterate the City of Airdrie’s stance on diversity, inclusion, and Truth and Reconciliation, making it clear that racial harassment is not a "business value" in your municipality.

• Safety Assurance: Address how the city intends to ensure that Indigenous residents and visitors feel safe and respected when engaging with local businesses.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for what’s right and promoting a safe, welcoming environment that the residents Airdrie deserve! Join me, and my fellow petitioners in signing and holding the owners of “Pauls Pizza of Airdrie” accountable for promoting an unsafe, unwelcoming, and divisive environment for the customers, community, and Indigenous residents of Airdrie/Calgary region!
