London Food Emergency! Appeal from Londoners to City Hall for urgent action!

The Issue

Two million Londoners – 400,000 children and a quarter of pensioners -  can’t afford sufficient food. We face terrifying fuel costs and levels of debt. The avoidable deaths seen in the pandemic must not be repeated!

In 2020/21 421,000 Londoners relied on the good work of volunteers at foodbanks, charities, faith groups and other community groups for food.

In this crisis we can't rely on the government or survive through charity. We rely on the Mayor of London and Greater London Assembly (GLA) to safeguard the health of our children, pensioners and vulnerable. This includes providing a safety net for food and nutrition through a pan-London strategic approach that ends the postcode lottery in free school meals, ends the humiliation of child dinner debt and the post code lottery in emergency food aid.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! London needs the RIGHT TO FOOD!

We appeal to the Mayor of London to provide an emergency food budget and urgently bring together boroughs and schools to deliver as a minimum safety net to protect the health of our communities:

1.    Universal free school meals for all primary and secondary children.

2.    A network of community kitchens, including the use of our school kitchens.

3.    Open access to emergency food centres (food banks) by ending the referral system and means testing.

These are emergency demands and are the absolute bare minimum to deal with the current crisis!
