Taylor Run Preservation Alert
Walks Planned for Saturday, October 17 – Sign up!
The City of Alexandria says it wants to restore Taylor Run, which runs through Chinquapin Park and past the First Baptist Church. The restoration project threatens a unique wetland and at least 28 native plant speciesthat are rare in Alexandria. The project also includes the removal of over 250 trees. Andthose are just the obvious impacts.
The Environmental Council of Alexandria (ECA) and other experts think the project will cause significant environmental harm to Taylor Run.
In a recent webinar, Alexandria officials presented the community with a nearly completed plan to reconstruct a 1900-foot section of the Taylor Run stream channel between the Chinquapin Park Aquatic Center and the First Baptist Church. The City claims this restoration plan will help the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River by reducing nutrient pollution.
Join us for a guided tour of Taylor Run on Saturday, October 17 to learn from local experts how this restoration project could harm the park’s wetlands and plants and find out what you can do to help preserve this natural treasure.
Tours of no more than 10 participants will leave every 25 minutes from the field along King Street next to the Chinquapin pool parking lot from 9:00 AM - Noon. If you are interested in reserving a spot please contact RRussell.Bailey@gmail.com and state your preferred start time (i.e., 9:00, 9:25, etc. up to 12:05).
