Stop the destruction of Alexandria's Chinquapin Park

The Issue

Save Taylor Run

The Environmental Council of Alexandria (ECA) and community leaders are demanding that the City of Alexandria work with the local community to redesign the City's proposed Taylor Run and Strawberry Run Stream Restoration Plans. The Taylor Run project will result in the loss of hundreds of mature trees and a large number of native plants in Chinquapin Park that are now rare in Alexandria.

The City claims that the project will improve water quality in the Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay. In fact, the benefits to the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay may be negligible or nonexistent. What we know for sure is that the collateral environmental damage to this unique natural ecosystem will be significant.

We have asked the City to meet with the community and environmental experts to consider alternative restoration actions that do not result in adverse impacts to the parks natural biodiversity.

Please sign our petition and continue to let the City Council know what you think about this project. The City has received over 200 comments so far on this one stream restoration project. They say that they will respond in writing to these comments by early December.  We have already made a little progress. Alexandria officilas have finally agreed to meet with us and one of our experts, Dr. John Field, on November 7th to discuss their so-called natural restoration of this stream channel.

ECA strongly believes that this project will result in significant harm to the park's existing rich biodiversity and that it will not help the Bay.

See our other fundraising efforts if you would like to help more!
