Protect/Preserve Native American Artifacts! STOP the Development of the Crego Farm

The Issue

Located in Onondaga County, the Crego Farm that borders the Seneca River in Baldwinsville, N.Y. has been farmed and protected by one family for nearly 200 years. In 1997, an archaeological survey was performed on a small portion of the the Crego Farm in preparation for a 24" gas pipeline from CNG Meter and Regulation Station in Therm City in Onondaga County to an existing Niagara Mohawk gas line in Oswego, N.Y. The area that was excavated and studied was approximately 60 feet wide in the midst of over 100 acres. As a result of the excavation, the Crego Farm was determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by S.H.P.O. (State. Historic. Preservation. Office). The Crego Farm was determined to be an example of The Early Chance Site of the Iroquois Confederation that dates to prehistory. Artifacts that were uncovered on this small section of land, include multiple long houses. One of the longhouses measured 285 ft long by 20 ft wide. Another longhouse that was uncovered on this site measured 85 ft.long x 35 ft.wide. "The Chance Phase occupation of the Crego Site is the earliest (A.D. 1400 - 1425) recorded for the Five Nations Iroquois to exemplify the full realization of the longhouse concept..." " It is at the Crego Site that crystallization of the concept of the Iroquois longhouse can be seen for the first time in Iroquois culture history." - Pratt & Pratt Archaeological Consultants 1997. In addition to the longhouses that were uncovered, artifacts on the Crego Farm provide evidence of some of the first Iroquois settlement in New York State. Recently, a proposal was submitted to the Town of Van Buren to zone this land to a P.U.D. (Planned. Unit. Development). This proposed development includes six apartments and over 120 homes, and may be used as commercial property. We can NOT let this happen to our community! Please sign this petition to stop construction of homes and commercial development of the Crego Farm. Development of this land will desecrate Native American culture, erase a large piece of Baldwinsville history, and forever change the town that we love! In addition to this petition, please consider signing the petition for Bill S 5701 - Unmarked Burial Site Protection Act, to cease desecration of unmarked Native American burial sites in New York State.
