Citizens in Opposition to the East 72nd Street Bike Lane Proposal
The Issue
The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) is proposing to install protected bike lanes on East 72nd Street. To date, DOT has not presented an actual plan for East 72 Street; however, any bike lane on East 72 Street is unfeasible due to its unique traffic dynamics. Any bike lane will create major public safety concerns.
East 72nd Street is a vital four-lane access way leading to the renowned York Avenue medical corridor, home to several major hospitals and medical facilities. Any reduction of travel lanes will lead to increased congestion, directly affecting the timely access of emergency vehicles to these critical healthcare facilities. In emergency situations, every second counts, and any potential delay can have dire consequences.
Moreover, East 72nd Street serves a high volume of vehicular traffic, and reducing the number of vehicle travel lanes to accommodate protected bike lanes could make pedestrian crossings more dangerous due to the increased likelihood of traffic bottlenecks.
Any bike lanes on East 72 Street are unnecessary. In 2016, it was the DOT that said bike lanes did not belong on East 72 Street and agreed with the community that the safer course for all concerned was to establish bike lanes on the much less traveled East 70th and 71st Streets. These existing bike lanes have a ten year track record of safety for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
It is crucial to maintain a balance between encouraging cycling and ensuring that emergency services, vehicular traffic, and pedestrian safety are not compromised.
